A serious problem in Mumbai is the extreme poverty alongside the extreme wealth. 62% of Mumbai lives in slums! This is according to the census in 2010. In the slums often houses are 1 bedroom homes that are holding a family of more than 4. I hope that most people that have access to electricity, running water and sufficient food and even a computer to view this, realise how lucky they are! Many people in the slums don't have any of this. The photo on the left above is a common sight of the slums in Mumbai. In contrast, with the photo on the right above it is hard to imagine that this is the same megacity. Mumbai is currently planning to build the world's tallest residential building.

As you can see Mumbai is in Maharashtra, the state coloured orange. It has 20.1% - 25% slum households compared to the total urban households. The movie slum dog millionaire was based and filmed in Mumbai. It is a movie about a boy from the slums that wins a million dollars.
